Checking the
gearbox oil level
NB the information on these pages refer to
Rover 825 diesel cars only, this procedure should not be used if you have a
petrol version of the 800. Refer to the appropriate manual for your car.
This is a manual 5 speed box. The version fitted to my car has this
information on a plate affixed to the gearbox casting.

Cars made up until 96 had the T650 box, and after (ROVER 800
Diesel models manufactured from VIN 230967) the T750. What difference there
is I'm not actually sure, the only thing is you add three quarters of a
litre of oil to the T750.......
Remove the front left-hand wheel. Towards the front of the plastic wheel
arch liner there is a panel Remove this (2 screws) and this will expose
the end of the gearbox. Carefully clean up the area. You should now find
a rubber plug. Pulling this out allows you to check / top-up the oil
level. On the end of the gearbox is a label, which looks
something like this:
|
According to the Rover manual, this is how to proceed.

Carefully remove the electrical
connector.
On my car a 15/16
inch AF socket fitted the reversing light switch. It needs to be a long
body type or a box spanner to avoid damaging the electrical terminals.
Don't lose the washer on the switch, you are supposed to fit a new one
but I just re-use the old one with a smear of grease on the mating
surface. |

Pour the oil in here until it
runs out of the level hole. Then pour the extra half litre of oil in
through this hole (three quarters of a litre for post 96 from VIN 230967
with the T750 box ) ..... remember to replace the level plug first!
I
have been told you should fit a new rubber plug although this is not stated in
the manual.
