Fitting new brake disc to the hubs (Range Rover axels)
Undo the drive cap bolts. The half-shaft will then pull out.
Bend the locking washers flat on the hub locknut and undo the nuts and the locking washer. Pull the hub off and catch the outer bearing. Make sure this is clean and ok and wrap it up in some newspaper and put somewhere safe. Stuff the hub with some clean newspaper to keep out dirt.
Make sure the stub axel is clean and cover with a cloth to keep out dirt.
Clamp the hub by the brake disc in a vice undo the hub to disc bolts. Using a piece of wood and a hammer drive off the hub from the disc.
Bolt the new disc to the hub making sure that the mating surfaces are clean. any flakes of rust etc trapped between them will cause the disc to run out of true. When you clamp the new disc in the vice use some soft jaws or wood to protect it.
Carefully slide the hub back on the stub axel. It should be half packed with the recommended grease first. Place the outer bearing back in it's position fit the washer and nut. If you have the proper tools refer to the workshop manual. If you do not the nut can be tightened thus: Tighten the nut with a suitable socket. Rotate the wheel a couple of times. Undo the nut a few threads, then do it up just hand tight. Rotate the hub a few times and check that the nut is still tight. Repeat. Now back off the nut one or two flats. Fit the locknut and washer bend over the locking washer onto the hub nut. If this is correct you can just feel the tiniest movement in the bearing when the hub is pulled back and to. Finish bending the locking washer over the locknut as shown in the manual.
I fitted new calipers at the same time as this needed doing.
Looks nice!
When taking out the left (longest, right rear halfshaft is a bit shorter) make sure there is enough room if the vehicle is in a confined space. Just right! Put the drive cap / halfshaft back on using a new gasket.
