No chain or  "rubber" timing belts to worry about!

The VM diesel engine uses gears, skew-cut for quietness, to drive the camshaft, vacuum pump (for the brake servo) and the injection gear.

The drive 2 is keyed to the crankshaft. It drives the oil pump 1 on one side and the vacuum pump 3 on the other.

This in turn engages the camshaft gear 4 which then drives the injection pump 5.

The gears receive a constant supply of oil draining from the camshaft.
