Changing aspect ratio on mpeg 2 files derived from Liteon 5045 using DVDPatcher

If you have your SKY or cable box set to 16:9 for the flat screen telly and you record programmes on the Liteon from this source, you'll notice that if you make  DVDs  in that format they'll looks vertically stretched on a standard screen because players are  displaying them as 4:3, even on a plasma or LCD you may have to fiddle with the picture control.

This is easily fixed using DVDPatcher a free app: http://www.wincesoft.de/html/dvdpatcher.html (or Google for it), I'll assume it is installed on the computer and we've opened it up. This may seem a bit complex but one you done it it is very easy the next time you use the app. Fir this example I'll assume the file is a MPEG 2 which has just been edited from a Liteon disc using say VideoReDo.

Warning! There is no "Undo" button for this process, so if in doubt work on a copy of your file - just in case!

Use the Browse button to navigate to your MPEG 2 file. When the app opens it always starts on a default setting (I've not figured out a way to save my settings, but it is easy to just alter them to suit our purpose every time not a lot of trouble). So we just need to alter a few things
1. Aspect Ratio, set it to 16:9
2. Set Horizontal Size to 720 [DVD DVB, the vertical width should already be 576 [PAL]
3. Bitrate, on my file it is 4650000, so we need to check the Custom button and type that in
4. Set to, Entire File
5. The 25 Frames/second [PAL] setting should already be selected.

Click Patch Now. This window will now open, the data on the left is the original file, to the right the new setting when processed

This is a good time to double-check the settings! Notice the only thing that has been changed is the aspect ratio. If something is not right, click Abort and start again after corrections.

Then click the Start button. Depending on the size of the file it will take a few seconds to a few minutes to complete.

You now have a perfect 16:9 file from the original 4:3
