Subscription options:

Individual mail: A copy of every message is sent to you.
Digest: Collects all of the messages made in a day into one (or more) large email per day.
Web Mail/No Mail: Selecting this option will discontinue your receiving the messages from the list until you uncheck the box. Useful if you prefer to read the messages from the site's web page. Also if you are going on holiday this setting will stop your mail in-box filling up. Use this setting if you want to stop messages for a long period but do not want to un-subscribe from the list.
