ENGINE - DIESEL

2 REPAIRS REVISED: 09/97

Refit

1. Clean cylinder head and block mating faces.

2. Clean cylinder head bolts.

3. Clean clamps and end plates.

4. Clean remaining components and blow out oil feed drillings.

5. Rotate crankshaft and align crankshaft pulley

to approximately 9 BTDC, (all pistons positioned approximately halfway down cylinder bores).

CAUTION: When the valve gear is dismantled the hydraulic tappets tend to expand to their maximum operating position. This is true for both used and new tappets. It is therefore essential to position the pistons as described above to prevent possible piston to valve contact during final assembly of the valve gear. The tappets will require approximately 30 minutes to retract to their normal operating position. After assembly, rotate crankshaft slowly to ensure valves clear pistons.

13. Using tools 18G 1402 and 18G 1665 remove18 bolts securing cylinder heads.

14. Remove 10 spacer blocks.

15. Remove 2 end plates.

16. Remove cylinder heads.

6. Ensure new cylinder head gaskets have same thickness indication as those removed.

If all gaskets were not the same on removal, ensure all are now of thickest type removed.

Cylinder head gasket compressed thickness

No notch = 1.42 ± 0.04 mm.

2 notches = 1.52 ± 0.04 mm.

1 notch = 1.62 ± 0.04 mm.

7. Position head gaskets.

17. Remove cylinder head gaskets and note thickness indication which could be 2 notches,

1 notch or no notches in position shown.

NOTE: All 4 cylinder head gaskets should be same thickness.
