Rover 825SD 800 Coupe 825i SD1 and Land Rover Web Site

All the replacement parts to do this job were off dismantled cars obtained from Rover enthusiast "Greegingers" on eBay. Excellent service and got exactly the right colour replacements which arrived promptly and in perfect condition, so if you want body or any other parts contact him either through the eBay shop

Rust had taken hold in the front wings. This starts where the plastic wheel arch liner contacts and sits in the folded edge on the inside of the arch. There was no signs of any factory rust protection, and not much in the way of paint either, so I suppose that a  16 year old car might be expected to have some problems here.

My theory is that mud collects in this interface and being gritty in nature vibration gradually wears through the protective coating or what paint there is. Eventually corrosion takes hold and the rest is inevitable.

This only showed as slight bubbling of the paintwork less than 12 months previously, no doubt road salt from the recent record breaking cold winter had accelerated the process.

What can be done? Well at this stage replacement makes the best sense and it is fortunate that 800 wings bolt on so are relatively easy to replace.

What you should do if the wings are ok on your car is to remove the wheel arch liners and treat the area with Waxoyl or some sort of paint or whatever you prefer. If that seems too onerous at least get an aerosol of Waxoyl with a probe and inject it into the join where metal meets plastic. Since this is one of the main areas where corrosion is a problem on these cars it is worth doing.

Here's the view of the back of the wing when it was removed, you can see how extensive the rust was.

Any old iron?

So I said relatively easy to replace, click here for the next page where I explain the process.
