Trouble with edited DVD_VR discs

On the Liteon 5045 editing is basic but adequate for removing commercials but hit and miss as far as any accuracy is concerned. I only use this for programmes I want to watch on the 5045's hard drive not for subsequently making DVD discs. This is because the DVDs it produces from hard drive recordings or direct/copied to DVD disc (DVD VR format) will very likely cause problems if a programme has several commercial breaks which are edited out on the Liteon, although the resulting disc will probably play ok on the machine or on a stand-alone player.

But - If the disc then needs to be copied or ripped to a PC for further editing it is possible you will run into problems. I've found that if the video has been previously edited on the Liteon it tends to give unexpected results in editing software such as DVD Author - video missing or in the wrong sequence, sound sync problems and so on. (Discs edited on the Liteon are also almost guaranteed to have audio sync problems when converted to DivX / Xvid avi files if you intend to do this). So just transfer the whole lot - ads and all - from the hard drive to the pc and do all editing there.

If you do have some discs you want to rip and fix VideoReDo can sometimes be used

I'd guess the problem with editing on the Liteon is in the joining of the the split parts together after the commercials have been removed. It must write instructions that are not interpreted correctly by software applications, which could explain why, while the disc originally played ok, when ripped to hard drive and edited or played in a software package, the parts of the video are sometimes played in the wrong order, and it is very likely to have problems with audio synchronisation.

A clue may be to do with 'Pack Header' missing messages like this from DVD Decrypter. I'll leave the technical explanation to the experts :

Long programs which will not fit on one DVD can be split over several discs to transfer them to the computer, this works ok. It is when video sections have been joined together on the Liteon that trouble occurs, the split does not affect the video each part which is then reassembled during the editing process on the PC.
